White House official: Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Kishida had “extremely fruitful” discussions over China export restrictions

According to Kurt Campbell, the White House’s Indo-Pacific coordinator, US President Joe Biden, and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida had “extremely fruitful” discussions last week over export restrictions on China about semiconductors.

To halt Beijing’s scientific and military advancements, the Biden administration announced a comprehensive set of export limits in October. These controls, which severely restrict Chinese access to US chipmaking technology, were among them.

However, it has not yet persuaded important allies, most notably Japan and the Netherlands, to implement comparable equipment constraints that are seen to be necessary for the restrictions to be effective.

During their meeting on Friday in Washington, where the two leaders praised their nations’ long-standing partnership amid worries about security threats from Beijing, Biden and Kishida brought up the subject, Campbell said at a think-tank event.

Campbell said at the Center for Strategic and International Studies event that President Biden raised the problem with Prime Minister Kishida. He signaled that he was reviewing it thoroughly and that he would be responding accordingly.

And I feel that we are pleased and that the conversations were quite fruitful.

Koji Tomita, the ambassador of Japan to the United States, stated at the same gathering that although it was a complex subject that needed industry coordination, both Japan and the United States anticipated progress in the upcoming weeks.

Prime Minister Mark Rutte

During a visit to the White House on Tuesday, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte and Vice President Joe Biden spoke about the significance of safe supply chains. Rutte said he perceived slow progress in negotiations with the US over the export restrictions.

Rutte gave an interview with Dutch TV. In this interview, he stated that he thinks they will be able to achieve a positive end in partnership, step by step. He did not specify what kind of partnership he was talking about.
