Fawad Chaudhry, a senior member of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), criticises the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Sunday for refusing to conduct a meeting regarding the general elections in Punjab despite court orders.
Fawad wrote on Twitter, “Don’t make a farce of the Constitution and court decisions, the Election Commission should have conducted a meeting today for the polls.”
According to Fawad, the nation will pay a high price for the ongoing Constitutional amendments.
“Fawad announces that the movement for the supremacy of the Constitution is ready to declare “enough is enough” and will commence with the Jail Bharo [movement] until the Constitution is restored.”
Imran Khan, chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and a former prime minister, applauded the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Saturday for deciding to hold elections in the province. He stated that the “nation stands behind judiciary for upholding the Constitution and restoring hope in the judicial system.”
The PTI leader emphasised on Twitter that there cannot be democracy in the nation without the rule of law.
In his essay, he stated that “a strong, independent, credible judicial system supports rule of law & preserves the Constitution.”
“The former premier delivered his speech the next day after the LHC requested elections in the province within 90 days.”
“Punjab Governor Ordered to Declare Election Date by Court in Reserved Judgment”
“The court issued a reserved judgment ordering the Punjab governor to declare a date for provincial elections.” The court also instructed the electoral board to hold the elections within the constitutionally permitted time frame.
Earlier in today’s hearing, the Chief Secretary of Punjab and the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) of Punjab both made appearances before the court.
Although the IGP admitted to the court that he was unaware of the case’s history, we will carry out whatever decision the ECP makes in this regard. “It was looking forward to such an assurance from the police chief,” the court said at this point.
The CS also reaffirmed the IG’s position and said he would adhere to the ECP’s instructions and the court’s ruling.
