Nigeria’s Bola Tinubu was declared winner of the presidential vote

Despite early requests for a re-vote from competitors, Bola Tinubu has been named the winner of Nigeria’s presidential election.

Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party finished in second with 6,984,520 votes, while Mr. Tinubu, who ran for the ruling All Progressives Congress party, received 8,794,726 votes.

According to the results released by the Independent National Electoral Commission, Peter Obi of the Labour Party, who was seen as a wildcard who had been appealing to younger voters, came in third place with 6,101,533 votes.

The two main opposition parties have claimed that irregularities were made possible by posting results late, and Mr. Abubakar and Mr. Obi are anticipated to file legal challenges to these claims.

The All Progressives Congress party, which won the election, advised them to accept the loss and avoid causing trouble.

Competition has three weeks to challenge the outcomes.

To have the election declared illegitimate, it will be necessary to show that the national electoral authority violated the law. Additionally, they will need to provide evidence that the actions taken by the authority could have had an impact on the election results.

Despite numerous attempts by those who lost, Nigeria’s Supreme Court has never annulled a presidential election.

The campaign website for Mr. Tinubu states that he was born in Lagos, Nigeria, in 1952 to a Muslim Yoruba family, however some claim he was born earlier.

He immigrated to the US in the 1970s. To pay for his studies, he performed several jobs, including night guard, dishwasher, and taxi driver.

In 1979, he graduated from Chicago State University with a business administration degree. He then went back to Nigeria during the 1980s and began working as an auditor for the oil corporation Mobil.

With the end of the military era, he was chosen to serve as governor of Lagos in 1999.

His success is disputed; some think he improved the city’s infrastructure while others claim it is still gravely dysfunctional. He served two terms.
