More than 30 PTI UC chairmen and vice chairpersons have declared they will not run in the upcoming elections for mayor and deputy mayor of Karachi.

PTI UC chairpersons do not participate in polls: At a meeting in Karachi, more than 30 PTI UC chairmen and vice chairs decided not to run in the June 15 elections for the mayor and deputy mayor of Karachi. They declared they would not support Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) nominee Hafiz Naeemur Rehman for mayor.

The PTI UC chairmen said they would not be present on election day. The UC chairman asserted, “I am familiar with the actual conditions in Karachi, and I emphasize that elected local government (LG) representatives have the right to autonomy.”

“The local leaders made decisions without consulting them, and they disagree with the choices made by the PTI Karachi Division office holders.

“JI has exploited the current circumstance and elected its representatives on the reserved seats,” they continued. We won’t submit to pressure of any type now or in the future.

After the LG elections, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) declared it would fully support JI’s nominee for mayor of Karachi.

Before the election for mayor of Karachi, the Sindh High Court (SHC) prohibited the administration from intimidating and ‘illegally’ detaining the UC chairman.

PTI UC Chairman Zeeshan Alam’s request for an adjournment of the Karachi mayor election was being heard by the SHC.

The court ordered the Election Commission of Pakistan to take action against people harassing the elected representatives while also directing that all UC chairpersons be present on the day of the Karachi mayor election.

However, after receiving assurances, The Sindh High Court dismissed Zeeshan Alam’s appeal.
