“The Trial – Pyaar, Kaanoon, Dhokha”: Kajol Makes Series Debut in Indian Remake of “The Good Wife”

The Trial Trailer – Pyaar, Kaanoon, Dhokha, the most recent in streamer Disney+ Hotstar’s long line of Indian remakes of popular international shows, marks Bollywood star Kajol’s series debut. An adaptation of CBS’ long-running ratings powerhouse The Good Wife, The Trial debuted its first trailer on Monday. Julianna Margulies plays a woman who resurrects her legal career following a public incident involving her husband. The 2009–2016 run of the original program served as the model for remakes in South Korea, Japan, Vietnam, and China.

In the movie The Trial, Kajol plays Noyonika Sengupta, who slaps her unfaithful husband Rajeev, played by actor Jisshu Sengupta, across the face for cheating on her and causing shame to their family in the first minutes of the trailer. Noyonika resolves to return to work and take charge of her life because she has children to support and no faith in the imprisoned and disgraced Rajeev. She joins a firm run by her old friend, Alyy Khan, a British-Pakistani actress who attests to her courtroom prowess. And that’s precisely what we witness in the following two images as Noyonika passionately and tenaciously defends her clients.

Navigating Ethical Dilemmas and Personal Turmoil: Kajol’s Journey in “The Trial” Remake

When Rajeev asks if she would represent him, she faces an ethical dilemma as she adjusts to her new life as an independent woman and perhaps even reignites old passions for her boss. Noyonika must learn to navigate these murky waters as she grows less emotional and more logical, torn between her professional and personal obligations. Suparn Varma, who previously served as both a writer and director on the immensely popular Prime Video series The Family Man and Rana Naidu, Netflix’s most recent Indian adaptation of Showtime’s Ray Donovan, is the show’s director.

Kajol, one of Bollywood’s most beloved actors, has gained fame for her romantic comedies alongside Shah Rukh Khan, such as Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, and My Name Is Khan. In 2021, she made her streaming debut with the Netflix movie Tribangha, and audiences can anticipate her appearance in Lust Stories 2 on the same platform. Ajay Devgn, an actor-director who married Kajol, made his streaming debut with Rudra: The Edge of Darkness, a Hindi translation of Luther from the BBC. On trial, Devgn also works as a producer.

India’s Remake Industry is Growing

No other streaming service has released as many remakes as Hotstar, even though Netflix has developed local-language adaptations like Call My Agent: Bollywood, Rana Naidu, and Class (the Hindi version of Élite). The streaming service has created Indian adaptations of popular shows, including The Office, Criminal Justice, and, most recently, The Night Manager. The Night Manager, which debuted in February, will return with a second set of Season One episode just a few weeks after The Trial debuts. The Trial, which will debut on July 14, also features Sheeba Chaddha, Kubbra Sait, and Gaurav Pandey. Watch the trailer above, and check Collider frequently for further information.
