On Friday, the Senate approved changes to the Election Act that modify the timeframes for a parliamentarian’s disqualification.

Senate passes law lifetime disqualification: According to the regulations approved by the upper house on Friday, a person’s prohibition from running for provincial or central legislatures will not exceed five years in circumstances where the period has not been specified.

The revisions will use the requirements outlined in Articles 62 and 63 of the constitution to determine a person’s eligibility to serve as a member of parliament. If there is no specific provision for disqualification in the constitution

The decision to disqualify any person by a court ruling shall result in their exclusion for a maximum of five years, starting from the day the decision is made public. The period of disqualification under Article 62(1)(f) cannot exceed five years.

Additionally, The authorities changed clause 232 of the Election Act to implement the new restrictions.

The Senate also approved changes granting the Election Commission of Pakistan the authority to announce the election date.

On Friday, the revisions to section 57 of the legislation approved the transfer of the right that was once held by the president and the governors of each province to the ECP.

The ECP will also be in charge of announcing the election schedule and will have the authority to modify it.
