After senior official Antony Blinken’s visit to Beijing, US President Joe Biden declared on Monday that the US and China are on the “right track.”
US-China relations on right trail: After a climate event in California, Biden told reporters, “We’re on the right track here. Blinken made progress on his two-day tour, which ended on Monday.
Blinken done “a hell of a job,” Biden continued, praising the work of his senior diplomat.
In order to prevent an all-out clash between the two countries, the US and China decided to normalise their relations and keep lines of communication open during Blinken’s visit.
deteriorating US-China relations
As tensions in the Taiwan Strait increased, relations between Washington and Beijing had never been worse. The deteriorating relations have also worsened due to a growing rivalry in the semiconductor sector, the US shooting down an alleged Chinese spy balloon, and differing perspectives on Russia’s conflict in Ukraine.
The highest-ranking US official to visit the Chinese capital in the previous five years was Blinken. He visited with key Chinese officials, including President Xi Jinping.
Blinken discussed all of the major points of contention between China and the US during his discussion with Xi.
Blinken, during a press conference in Beijing, announced that they have made progress and are moving forward. However, he acknowledged that resolving the situation requires more than one visit.
ongoing negotiations to free three Americans
In a later interview with US network CBS News, Blinken stated that the US and China are discussing the release of three US citizens held in China.
We are actively discussing it, he stated, without going into any detail.
A Chinese court found Mark Swidan, a Texas businessman, guilty in 2019, while Kai Li, an accused spy, received a 10-year term in 2018. David Lin, a pastor, has been detained in China since 2006. The US claims that all three individuals were unfairly convicted.
“It (their release) would, regardless of anything else, be a very important and positive development, and we’re working intensely,” said Blinken.
