Iran joined the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) as a full member on Tuesday.

Iran officially member of SCO: Iranian Ambassador Mohsen Bakhtiar, SCO Secretary General Zhang Ming, and other envoys and top SCO member state officials were present for the magnificent event that raised the Iranian flag at the SCO Secretariat.

Zhang Ming, the Secretary General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), addressed attendees of the ceremony and expressed confidence that Iran’s full membership will contribute to improving mutual trust and solidarity among member states, preserving regional security and stability, and opening up new opportunities for enhancing and deepening cooperation in the economy and trade, transportation, investment, tourism, energy, and other SCO areas of shared interest.

The Shanghai Spirit has brought us together over time and evolved into our shared compass for the future, he continued.

He was of the opinion that the SCO member states would continue to uphold the Shanghai spirit, seize chances presented by challenges, and contribute more to global and regional peace, security, development, and prosperity if member states worked together.

The Secretary-General congratulated the Iranian government and people on behalf of the SCO Secretariat.

Iran Becomes Full Member of SCO, Vows Cooperation for Regional Security and Economic Ties

Additionally, Mohsen Bakhtiar, the Iranian ambassador to China, stated in his statement that as a full member of the SCO, his nation will cooperate with the other members for regional security and peace.

According to him, Iran will push for greater economic ties with the SCO nations, establish partnerships with them in a range of fields like manufacturing, agriculture, and technology, and support sustainable development.

On September 17, 2021, at Dushanbe, Tajikistan, during the 21st SCO presidents summit, the decision to welcome Iran as a full-time member of the organization was made.

During the previous SCO meeting in Samarkand in September 2022, Iran committed to joining the organisation by signing a memorandum of understanding.

The SCO was an eight-member transcontinental political, economic, and security organisation before Iran became a member.

However, At a conference held in Shanghai in 2001, China, Russia, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan created the organisation.
