Justice Musarrat Hilali takes oath as second woman SC judge

Justice Musarrat Hilali took her oath of office as a judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan on Friday, becoming the second woman to hold that position in the nation.

Musarrat Hilali takes oath as SC judge: Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial swore in Justice Hilali during a ceremony attended by other members of the Supreme Court, attorneys, and government representatives.

The Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) authorized the elevation of Justice Musarrat Hilali, the Chief Justice of the Peshawar High Court (PHC), to the Supreme Court last month.

In order to replace two openings for Supreme Court judges, Justice Qazi Faez Isa, the senior puisne judge of the court, requested an early meeting of the JCP and offered the names of the chief justices of the Sindh and Peshawar high courts.

Additionally, in a letter issued to all commission members, Justice Isa advised that they fill the vacancies promptly and propose the names of the nominated judges in advance, taking the seniority principle into consideration.

Justice Hilali, who is she?

Justice Hilali, who was born in Peshawar on August 8th, 1961, graduated from Khyber Law College of Peshawar University with a law degree. He enlisted as an advocate in the district courts in 1983, the high court in 1988, and the supreme court of Pakistan in 2006.

From November 2001 until March 2004, she served as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s first female Additional Advocate General. Subsequently, they named her the first female chair of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Environment Protection Tribunal.

She was also the first woman to hold the position of Ombudsman for the Protection Against Harassment of Women at Work. On March 26, 2013, they promoted her to the position of Additional Judge, and on March 13, 2014, the Peshawar High Court approved her as a permanent judge.

She was sworn in as the temporary CJ of PHC on April 1, 2023.
