Parvez Elahi gets bail in money laundering case

In a money laundering case brought by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) against Chaudhry Parvez Elahi, a municipal court in Lahore on Tuesday allowed him release on bail.

Parvez Elahi gets bail: The FIA had detained the former Punjab chief minister on suspicion of money laundering, and a special court had approved his request for release.

Elahi was required by the court to post a Rs. 500,000 surety bond as collateral for the bail.

The Banking Offences Court’s Judge Aslam Gondal delivered the decision and chastised the FIA for its lack of cooperation.

Despite the court’s ruling, the judge claimed that FIA did not turn over the record.

On June 20, the FIA charged the former chief minister of Punjab and his son with money laundering and engaging in questionable activities. Law enforcement authorities apprehended him the next day and placed him under a 14-day judicial remand before sending him to jail.

Recall that Elahi was first detained on June 1 in connection with a graft case, as part of the PTI’s persecution following the May 9 protests. Subsequently, he faced multiple detentions in different circumstances, including the two money laundering incidents.

The PTI president had asked the court to grant him release in the same manner as PTI Chairman Imran Khan and Vice-Chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi during the LHC hearing on his bail request.
