As the monsoon season moves into various regions of the nation, the National Disaster Management Authority has issued a warning of severe rainfall from Friday to Wednesday (July 23).

NDMA warns of heavy rains: The authority stated in a statement that “in the next three days, it is likely that the discharge of water in Mangla, Jhelum River, and Marala in Chenab River will increase.”

The alert was issued when dust storms and rains were occurring throughout much of Karachi. Video showed a flooded street that caused a backup of traffic from Nagan Chowrangi to Power House.

The Met Office predicted that starting on July 18, monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea were likely to enter the upper and central parts of the country, causing heavy rain in most regions. It cautioned that this could increase the likelihood of river floods.

Disaster Management Body Issues Warning for Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms

The disaster management body issued a warning that numerous districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Sindh, Gilgit Baltistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and Islamabad could experience heavy rain, wind, and thunderstorms with a probability of heavy rainfall.

In order to accommodate for quick de-watering operations in flooded areas, it suggested the city and district administration to develop contingency traffic plans for areas susceptible to flooding in urban centres.

In order to establish an early warning system and quick action in susceptible locations, the authority requested local governments and rescue organisations.

It urged prompt evacuation of residents from low-lying areas in the event of potential risk and urged the pertinent institutions to turn on the drainage system in flood-prone areas during the rainy season.

The statement advised that “the relevant provincial institutions should keep providing new information through all media and local platforms to keep the public informed about the expected situation” and that “keep the necessary emergency personnel and machinery ready to deal with the flood situation.”
