Contempt case: ECP defers Imran Khan’s indictment till Aug 2

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) postponed the indictment of former prime minister Imran Khan in a case involving contempt of the electoral body and the chief election commissioner (CEC) until August 2.

Imran’s attorney asked the ECP to postpone the hearing throughout the hearing so he could acquire more information about the matter.

The hearing was then postpone until August 2 by the ECP.

In connection with the contempt proceedings against the former premier, the commission has instructed the Islamabad Police to detain Imran and bring him before the electoral institution today (Tuesday).

The Director General (Law) Muhammad Arshad of the ECP wrote a letter to the inspector general of police (IGP) in Islamabad, informing him that they required Imran’s presence in the proceedings for contempt of the commission’s proceedings initiated in accordance with Section 10 of the Elections Act of 2017.

The commission has issued a non-bailable warrant of arrest for Mr. Imran Ahmed Khan Niazi in accordance with the authority granted to it by Section 4(2) of the Elections Act 2017 and other enabling provisions of the act and rules. This warrant authorises and compels you to detain the aforementioned Mr. Imran Ahmed Khan Niazi and bring him before the Pakistani Election Commission on July 25, 2023, at 10:00 am, according to the letter.

For allegedly using disrespectful language against the chief election commissioner and the ECP, the ECP sent Imran with contempt notices last year.
