Harmanpreet Kaur, the captain of India’s women’s cricket team, came under fire on Tuesday for setting a poor example after smashing the stumps and verbally attacking the umpires during a match against Bangladesh.
India Women’s Captain Slammed: According to media sources, Kaur’s actions in the one-day international, which finished in a rare tie on Saturday, might result in a punishment of 75% of her match money and a two-game suspension.
After being given out on 14, Kaur struck the stumps and afterwards referred to the umpiring as “pathetic”.
Upon hearing her counterpart Nigar Sultana’s request to invite the umpires on stage during the post-match presentation, she compelled the Bangladesh players to decline a group photo.
Diana Edulji, a former women’s captain, said in her column for the Indian Express on Tuesday, “I have been watching cricket for a long time, but I have never seen anyone behave that way India skipper Harmanpreet Kaur did after the game.”
She gave her comrades a poor example. I say that because juniors look up to seniors, and over time, this might have an effect on the culture of the squad, Edulji added.
It was unpleasant to see Harmanpreet ask the umpires to take a photo with the Bangladeshi team, giving the impression that they were teammates who played for them.
Madan Lal, the Indian men’s World Cup champion, also disparaged Kaur.
Lal tweeted, “Harmanpreet’s actions against the Bangladesh women’s team was horrible.
She is not greater than the competition. She gave Indian cricket a very poor reputation. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) ought to impose very severe sanctions.
