China reportedly reinstated Wang Yi as the nation’s top diplomat and removed outgoing Foreign Minister Qin Gang from his position. Qin Gang had not been seen in public for a month.
Wang Yi back as foreign minister: The National People’s Congress (NPC) Standing Committee met on Tuesday and dismissed Qin, 57, from his position.
Qin, credited with being a pioneer of the so-called “wolf warrior diplomacy,” was the youngest member of China’s State Council, the country’s de facto Cabinet.
“He assume the position of foreign minister in December 2022 and was considere a confidant of President Xi Jinping.” He was the Chinese ambassador to the US before rising to the position of top diplomat for the nation.
On June 25, when he hosted colleagues from Vietnam, Sri Lanka, and Russia, Qin made his last public appearance.
There were questions about his absence from a high-level ASEAN summit in Indonesia, but the foreign ministry claimed he was unable to go due to health problems.
Additionally, Qin managed the restoration of diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran in March and met with his American colleague Antony Blinken in Beijing early last month.
From 2013, Wang, 69, held the position of foreign minister for over ten years.
Since March 2021, the NPC Standing Committee has the authority to nominate or depose any State Council official.
Previously, only a national assembly of Chinese parliamentarians could authorise the nomination or dismissal of officials from the de facto Cabinet.
