The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) once again postponed the indictment of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader and former prime minister in a contempt case.
PTI chairman’s indictment in ECP contempt case: The ECP requested the PTI chairman to appear for an indictment, however the PTI chief never showed up.
A four-member bench led by Sindh member Nisar Ahmed restarted the hearing to frame charges against the former prime minister.
The former prime minister was represented at the ECP by Shoaib Shaheen. Shaheen begged the ECP to postpone the hearing since his client needed to go to the hospital for a checkup. Additionally, he requested that the ECP not require the former prime minister to testify in the contempt case.
Ikaramullah Khan, a member of the ECP, noted that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader would face charges today and asked how the accused in a contempt case could have an exemption.
Shaheen stated that they have not yet proven the charges against his client.
They eventually postponed the hearing until August 22.
For allegedly using “intemperate” language against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikander Sultan Raja and the electoral watchdog, the ECP issued summons to Imran Khan and others in August 2022.
The political leaders frequently denounced the electoral body and CEC Sikandar Raja, referring to them as a “subsidiary of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz.”
