Justin and Sophie Trudeau separate after 18 years of marriage

After 18 years of marriage, Justin Trudeau and his wife Sophie Gregoire-Trudeau have announced their separation.

Justin and Sophie Trudeau separate: The 51-year-old Canadian prime minister wrote on Instagram that the choice was the result of “many meaningful and difficult conversations.”

Xavier, 15, Ella-Grace, 14, and 9-year-old Hadrien are the three children that Mr. Trudeau and the 48-year-old former model and TV host have together. They were married in late May 2005.

In a statement, he said: “Sophie and I would want to communicate the fact that we have decided to separate following many painful and significant conversations.

“As always, we remain a close family, with a deep love and respect for each other, as well as for everything we have built and continue to build.”

According to Mr. Trudeau’s office, the two had a written contract.

The statement declared, “We have labored to ensure that we have taken all legal and moral measures regarding our choice to separate, and we will continue to do so moving forward.”

The two first linked as adults when they co-hosted a charity dinner in 2003. They first met as kids when Sophie attended the same school as his youngest brother, Michel.

After being electe as prime minister in late 2015, Mr. Trudeau and Sophie were frequently spotte out and about and traveling abroad.

They both appeared in the pages of Vogue magazine and brought star power to the prime minister’s office together.

However, the first lady has taken on a less prominent role lately, rarely accompanying the prime minister on official outings.

The two of them did, however, travel to London in May for King Charles’ coronation, and they were present when US President Joe Biden paid a visit in late March.

The second prime minister to do so while in power is Mr. Trudeau. During the latter year of the older Trudeau’s tenure as prime minister, in 1984, his mother Margaret Trudeau and father Pierre Trudeau divorced after divorcing in 1979.
