Minister for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb declared that the PEMRA Amendment Bill 2023 would be rescinded in response to the journalists’ complaint.
Minister announces withdraw PEMRA Bill: During a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Information, the minister made the news. Marriyum Aurangzeb remarked during the meeting that the government sought to repeal the “black laws” of PEMRA and that she respected the concerns voiced by the press community on a few sections of the bill.
“The minister announced that the PML-N supports freedom of expression and guarantees that neither the party nor the people’s constitutional rights would face compromise.”
“While in opposition, Ms. Aurangzeb stated that the measure had been crafted with input from all parties.”
The bill
Minister for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb amended the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Amendment) Bill, 2023, and the National Assembly approved it.
Amendment 2 calls for “fair, transparent, and independent rating to the broadcasters for their TV channels.”

The minister proposed changing clause 8 of the bill to read as the standing committee reports by doing the following. “Minister for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb amended Section 20 of Ordinance XIII of 2002, adding the phrase ‘and such material will be in addition to preamble and the licensee will also submit an annual compliance report to this effect or as and when necessary by the Authority;’ to clause (e) as of ‘8.’”
