Officials reported on Wednesday that Ukrainian drones damaged at least two military aircraft at an airport in northwest Russia, with numerous other Russian regions experiencing heavy bombardment overnight.

Ukrainian drones attack airport: The assault on the Pskov airport, which is more than 400 miles (about 700 km) from the Ukrainian border, was the most recent attack to shake Russian soil since Kyiv promised to “return” the conflict to Russia in July.

Regional governor Mikhail Vedernikov posted on social media that they had repelled a drone strike at Pskov airport. They further mentioned that there were no injuries, but officials were assessing the damage caused.

Vedernikov shared a video on YouTube, displaying a large fire and smoke in the skyline, accompanied by distant blasts and the sound of sirens. He claimed to have been at the scene of the attack in the early hours of Wednesday.

The governor later released film that showed a barrage of firing coming from what seemed to be Russian air defences.

The military ministry, which earlier in the morning claimed to have shot down a wave of drones in numerous different areas, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

According to emergency services and state news agency TASS, the strike in Pskov destroyed four Ilyushin Il-76 heavy freight planes.

At least two Il-76 military cargo jets caught fire at the airport, according to the emergencies ministry.

Escalation in Conflict: Raid Indicates Battle Advancing into Russian Territory, Flights Canceled

According to Mykhaylo Podolyak, the top adviser to Volodymyr Zelensky, the raid provid evidence that the battle was advancing into Russian territory and that it “could not be stop.”

Nevertheless, he continued, Ukraine “strictly adheres to the obligation not to use the weapons of its partners” to launch an attack within Russia.

Following the incident, the airport cancelled flights on Wednesday. According to governor Vedernikov, normal operations will resume on Thursday.

In order to “avoid such circumstances in the future,” the Kremlin stated on Wednesday that military experts were trying to determine the routes the drones were travelling.

Dmitry Peskov, a spokesperson for the Kremlin, told reporters that “in fact, the terrorist activity of the Kyiv regime continues, with an overwhelming number of drones flying precisely at civilian targets.”

Pskov is surrounded by NATO countries Belarus to the south and Estonia and Latvia to the west. It was also the target of drone attacks in late May.
