In spite of his ongoing recovery from a catastrophic knee injury, Kane Williamson will lead the Black Caps, giving New Zealand’s chances of winning the 50-over World Cup a boost.
Williamson back to captain NZ: Williamson, who has more over 6,500 runs in one-day international cricket, captained New Zealand during their heartbreaking World Cup final loss to England.
After having surgery to repair damaged ligaments in his right knee sustained while playing for Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League, the top batter has been out since April.
Williamson told New Zealand reporters, “Naturally, the preparation isn’t ideal, but I didn’t get too much of a say in it and the thought of playing at another World Cup is really exciting.
It’s about crossing off the tasks I have to complete for my knee and anticipating the competition.
The head coach, Gary Stead, has already chosen Williamson for the 15-man New Zealand squad, with the official announcement set for September 11, following Williamson’s persuasion of his readiness.
“Kane has applied phenomenal dedication to his rehabilitation,” stated Stead.
He has tried everything possible to resume playing cricket at the highest level. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to choose him.
On October 5, New Zealand takes on England in Ahmedabad’s World Cup debut, but Stead said there isn’t a set timetable for Williamson’s return.
“We want to give Kane every bit of time that is available to aid his recovery,” he continued.
The World Cup is a lengthy competition, so we’ll keep an eye on his development in the month leading up to the opening game.
