Mexico moves closer to electing first female president

Mexico City The majority ruling party will put the former mayor of Mexico City forward as its presidential candidate, bringing the nation one step closer to electing its first female president the next year.

Mexico closer to electing first female president: In accordance with the Morena party’s decision, Claudia Sheinbaum will stand as its candidate in the June election. The constitution of Mexico forbids current President Andrés Manuel López Obrador from serving a second six-year term.

Alfonso Durazo, the president of the Morena National Council, claimed that Sheinbaum defeated former Foreign Affairs Secretary Marcelo Ebrard by double digits in five party polls.

Sheinbaum is a trusted supporter of López Obrador, and as Morena’s candidate in June, she will have a clear edge.

Sheinbaum said, “I’m excited,” and thanked each of her rivals individually, with the exception of Ebrard, who was not present. To have been a part of this movement from the beginning makes me feel “very proud and very honoured.”

A large opposition coalition chose Xóchitl Gálvez, a female politician, as its nominee last week.

In recent polls, Sheinbaum, aged 61, was ahead of Ebrard. Both had resigned from their jobs to devote their full attention to the campaign.

Durazo added that although there were challenges, the outcome was unaffected by them. “The result of this exercise is definitive,” he stated. He urged the party to unite behind Sheinbaum’s candidature.

Sheinbaum received praise from the other party candidates present at the announcement. The only contender who did not show up was Ebrard.

A few hours before to the announcement on Wednesday, Ebrard expressed his displeasure with the procedure, demanded that it be redone, and said that his party was beginning to resemble the Institutional Revolutionary Party, which infamously allowed each president to choose his own successor and dominated Mexico for 71 years. He stated that he would determine how to proceed on Monday.

“Other party officials appeared to take issue with Ebrard’s complaints. They did so in a roundabout way by stating that the party’s internal affairs were open and democratic.”

Sheinbaum, who has a background in environmental science, leans firmly to the left. She frequently mirrored López Obrador’s tirades against the previous Mexican presidents’ neoliberal economic policies, blaming them for the glaring inequality and high levels of violence in the nation.

According to López Obrador, he will let the party faithful choose its nominee.

“Sheinbaum’s Journey: From Mayor to Environmental Advocate in Mexican Politics”

Sheinbaum and Ebrard lack the president’s charisma and easy access to the party base, but Sheinbaum skillfully exploited her position as mayor of the nation’s capital to draw attention to free concerts by well-known bands in the square’s expansive central area and to advocate for López Obrador’s signature social programmes, such as pensions for seniors and student scholarships.

“Her popularity is expected to secure Sheinbaum’s victory in the June 2 election. Morena has expanded its influence over 22 of Mexico’s 32 states.”

However, Sheinbaum promises to dedicate Mexico to sustainability. Furthermore, Sheinbaum, who holds a PhD in engineering and served on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which received a joint Nobel Peace Prize in 2007,

She would seem to regularly clash with López Obrador because of this commitment. He erected a big new oil refinery, supported the government-owned oil firm, and favoured dirtier state-owned energy producers. However, if she had any overt critiques, she kept them to herself.

She stated, “I believe in science,” in an interview with the AP earlier this year. “I think that technology can help us live better lives,” According to her, the majority of energy in the future must come from renewable sources.

She did exhibit greater independence when it came to acting more fiercely in the early stages of the Covid-19 epidemic. Sheinbaum wore a protective face mask, shut down pubs and nightclubs, and campaigned for more testing as the president minimised the dangers.

She overcame criticism for how she managed the extensive underground system in the metropolis. A part that was elevated fell in May 2021, killing 26 people and injured up to 100 others.

Sheinbaum seemed to address Ebrard on Wednesday night while screams of “President! President!” reverberated around the hallway.

However, The importance of unity and the fact that doors are always open make this statement true.
