Ashwin still in mix for India’s World Cup squad, says Rohit

Captain Rohit Sharma has indicated that veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is still a strong contender to play a role in India’s World Cup campaign, despite being exclud from the provisional squad.

Ashwin still mix for World Cup squad: In India’s initial 15-person World Cup team, they selected Kuldeep Yadav as the lone specialist spinner, accompanied by Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel, two spin-bowling all-rounders.

Prior to Sunday’s Asia Cup final in Colombo, India resorted to Washington Sundar as a replacement for Patel rather than Ashwin, who is 37 years old.

Off-spinner Sundar ultimately missed out on the opportunity to bowl as India routed Sri Lanka in 15.2 overs their route to a 10-wicket victory.

Sundar’s selection, according to Rohit, was in no way further evidence that Ashwin, who played the final of his 113 one-day internationals in January 2022, had fallen in the standings.

“Ashwin is next in line as an all-around spinner. After India won the Asia Cup for the ninth time, Rohit told reporters, “I have been speaking to him on the phone.

“Axar sustained the injuries just in time. Washington had to come and play the part for us because he was available.

“He (Washington) was in the Asian Games camp, so he was cricket-fit.

“With regard to the players’ roles, I have been extremely clear. Everyone is informed.

Up to September 28th, teams can make adjustments to their rosters.

The triumph provided a much-needed lift before the World Cup, although batter Shreyas Iyer missed the most of the Asia Cup due to a back spasm.

“Rohit Sharma stated that they left Ravichandran Ashwin out of the provisional squad but emphasized that Ashwin is still a strong contender to play a role in India’s World Cup campaign.”

He is 99% okay right now, I should say.

“He looks good, he spent a lot of time batting and fielding (in the nets), and he was on the ground before we arrived. I don’t believe it should bother us.

Later this month, India will host Australia for a three-match ODI series, and on October 8, the teams will square off in Chennai for the opening match of the World Cup.
