The 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) is commencing today, with nearly 150 world leaders expected to attend. Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar arrived in New York on Monday afternoon to lead Pakistan’s delegation.
PM Kakar reaches New York: Munir Akram, Pakistan’s ambassador to the United Nations, Masood Khan, Ambassador Aamir Khan, Pakistan’s deputy permanent representative to the UN, Consul General Aamer Ahmed Atozai, and other officials met him at the John F. Kennedy International Airport.
On September 22, the prime minister will make the first caretaker premier from Pakistan to address the General Assembly.
For the high-level debate of the Assembly from September 19 to September 26, there are extensive security measures in place inside and outside the UN complex.
In his speech, Prime Minister Kakar is anticipated to present Pakistan’s viewpoint on a number of important regional and global topics, including the Jammu and Kashmir conflict. He will also go into detail on the important steps his interim administration took to support the nation’s economic recovery and efforts to attract both domestic and foreign investment.
The prime minister will also meet informally with colleagues from different nations as well as with the leaders of international organisations, philanthropic groups, and business executives. He also participates in a lot of media events.
Jalil Abbas Jilani, the foreign minister, arrived on Sunday.
Ambassador Munir Akram announced during a news briefing in New York last week that a sustainable development goals (SDG) summit will also take place while PM Kakar is visiting the UN headquarters.
The SDG summit will coincide with the Assembly session and take place in New York on September 18 and 19.
The prime minister will discuss securing funding for the SDGs, according to Ambassador Akram.
At a different conference on financing for development, the prime minister will also deliver the keynote address. “He will talk about how to mobilise private sector finance for development,” the Pakistani envoy added.
