Sergei Shoigu, the Russian military minister, will travel to Tehran on Tuesday, according to the semi-official Tasnim news agency in Iran, which also said that he will meet with senior Iranian officials.

Russia’s defence minister visit Tehran: “Since Western sanctions imposed against Russia after its invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Tehran and Moscow have strengthened their bilateral connections, particularly in the military area.”

Following a rumour that Washington had requested Tehran to cease selling drones to Moscow, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov stated last month that Russia’s military cooperation with Iran will not buckle under geopolitical pressure.

Although Iran has admitted to providing drones to Russia, it has previously claimed that the delivery occurred before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Moscow has refuted claims that its troops employed Iranian drones in Ukraine.
