To reduce violations and maintain commuter safety, the National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP) has announced a significant increase in traffic fines.
Motorway police increase traffic fines: As the highway police are presently undertaking an awareness campaign for the public through mainstream media, social media, and other channels, the revised traffic fines will go into effect on October 1, 2023.
New Traffic and Motorway Penalties
Overspeeding: The fine has been increased from Rs750 to Rs2,500 for overspeeding.
Further, The fine has been raised from Rs. 1,200 to Rs. 1,500 for overtaking.
Driving at night while employing ineffective lights: The official will now issue a Rs5,000 citation for this offence instead of the previous Rs500 one.
Additionally, Negligence and carelessness: The penalty for such offences has been raised from Rs 300 to Rs 1500.
Driving without a licence: Instead of the previous Rs750 charge, those who operate vehicles without licences will now be subject to a Rs5,000 fine.
New traffic legislation guidelines
“New traffic laws have been established by the highway police. These laws include penalties for things like the unlawful use of police lights.”
Using unlicensed police lights: Offenders shall be fined Rs. 5,000 for using unlicensed police lights.
Additionally, There would be fines of Rs. 1,000 and Rs. 2,000 for using HID lights and ostentatious licence plates, respectively.
