Imran Khan should be shifted to Adiala Jail: IHC

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) ordered on Monday that the former prime minister Imran Khan be transported from Attock Jail to Adiala Jail.

Imran should shifted to Adiala Jail: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman’s post-arrest bail request in the cypher case is now being heard by Chief Justice Aamer Farooq.

The case in question involves the alleged “misuse” of a diplomatic cipher’s contents, which former premier Imran used as evidence of an attempt to overthrow his administration.

Currently imprisoned at the Attock Jail is Imran. The hearing was scheduled for today, Monday, by the supreme court on Saturday.

On September 16, Salman Safdar, the former PM’s attorney, submitted a bail request. Yousuf Naseem Khokar, secretary of the state and interior ministries, was designated as the case’s respondent in the petition.

Further, Imran entered the plea after his and the senior politician Shah Mahmood Qureshi’s post-arrest bail requests were denied by a special court constituted under the Official Secrets Act and hearing the case brought against the PTI leader and the vice chairman of his party.

Earlier this week, the special court judge, Abual Hasnat Muhammad Zulqarnain, authorized the PTI chairman’s petition to allow him to consult with his legal team and doctor while being held in Attock Jail.

Cypher case history

Additionally, Imran and Qureshi were the targets of a case under Sections 5 and 9 of the Official Secrets Act of 1923.

“Following the conclusion of inquiry No 111/2023 initiated by the Counter Terrorism Wing (CTW), FIA, it was revealed in the FIR registered on August 15 that former Prime Minister Imran Ahmad Khan Niazi, former Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, and their associates conveyed information from the secret classified document (cipher telegram received from Parep Washington dated March 7, 2022, to the Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs) to unauthorized individuals, i.e., the general public.” They did so by distorting the facts to further their “ulterior motives” and personal interests, which is detrimental to the state security.
