Wanindu Hasaranga, Sri Lanka’s primary all-rounder, will not be participating in the forthcoming ICC World Cup 2023, which will start on October 5.

Sri Lanka squad for World Cup: In the Lanka Premier League (LPL) match between B-Love Kandy and Jaffna Kings last month, Wanindu Hasaranga sustained a hamstring injury.

He was later disqualified from the 2023 Asia Cup and may now need surgery after exacerbating his hamstring strain during rehabilitation.

Arjuna de Silva, the chairman of Sri Lanka’s medical committee, had previously made a suggestion that Wanindu Hasaranga’s participation in the ICC World Cup 2023 is extremely doubtful.

He sustained a grade 2 tear in the LPL, but during recovery he made it worse. Today, a grade 3 tear exists. The fact that there is also a T-junction hamstring injury further complicates the situation, according to Arjuna de Silva.

“We are speaking with foreign physicians to determine whether or not he requires surgery. He will be out of commission for at least three months if he does. It’s improbable that he will be able to play in the World Cup right now because of how bad the situation is, the speaker continued.

The ICC World Cup 2023 has disqualified not only Hasaranga, but also Dushmantha Chameera, who struggled to recover from a shoulder injury.

Dilshan Madushanka and Lahiru Kumara, on the other hand, have returned to the Sri Lankan team after missing the Asia Cup 2023.

Maheesh Theekshana, a crucial Sri Lankan spinner who missed the Asia Cup final against India, has also been added to the roster.
