Despite being in the midst of one of the greatest economic crises, Pakistan has received its first cargo of liquefied petroleum gas from Russia.
Pakistan receives Russian petroleum gas shipment: Late on Tuesday, the Russian embassy in Islamabad announce that the 100,000 metric tonnes of cargo were delivere via a land route passing through Iran.
The embassy stated that discussions for a second shipment were in progress without providing any additional information about the arrangement.
The Pakistani government is scrambling to find discounted energy supplies that could provide some relief from the country’s catastrophic currency loss and record-high inflation.
The government announced a significant rise in the price of energy and gasoline goods last month due to the uncertain economic future.
The administration said that because of the agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), it had no choice but to ignore the nationwide protests that the decision had sparked.
In July, the IMF authorized a $3 billion short-term bailout plan, saving the South Asian nuclear power’s economy from going into default.
Earlier this year, Pakistan and Russia agreed to a deal for the purchase of oil at a reduced price, but the trial proved unprofitable, leading to the halt of imports.
