South Africa beat defending champions England

Must Read

In the 20th game of the ICC World Cup 2023, South Africa outplayed England by 229 runs.

South Africa beat England: In terms of net run rate (NRR), the Proteas have undoubtedly had it easy thanks to the significant victory, while the defending champions will need to take some unusual steps if they want to have a chance at making it to the tournament’s semifinals.

Three of their four top-order batsmen, Dawid Malan, Joe Root, and Ben Stokes, all failed to reach double digits for England, demonstrating how none of their hitters could maintain their composure in the face of the devastating African bowling attack.

Gus Atkinson and Mark Wood, the tailenders for England, made a heroic effort to prevent them from losing by 300 runs. They combined for a 70-run partnership, with Wood scoring an unbroken 43 runs in 17 deliveries.

The entire English batting order was all out for just 170 runs after losing wickets in short succession, with Wood leading the way with 43 runs.

Lungi Ngidi, Marco Jensen, Kagiso Rabada, Keshav Maharaj, and Gerald Coetzee were all devastating bowlers for the Proteas who sent all of the English bats back to the pavilion.

Africa, who batted first, set a lofty 400-run goal thanks to an outstanding performance from their top and middle order.

The Proteas did not flinch and continued to play with the aggressive mindset as Reeza Hendricks and Russie van der Dussen created a significant 121-run partnership despite losing an early wicket of Quinton de Kock for just four runs in the opening over.

Heinrich Klaasen and Marco Jensen’s 151-run partnership dealt the English bowlers the final blow.

Jensen provided 75 runs off only 42 deliveries, including an explosive knock of nine boundaries, while Klaasen hit a quick century, blasting 109 runs off just 67 deliveries with 16 boundaries.

Reece Topley took three wickets for England, while Gus Atkinson and Adil Rashid each took two, but it was insufficient against the Proteas’ devastating hitting.

England will play Sri Lanka in Bengaluru on October 26 while South Africa will now play Bangladesh on October 24 at the same location.
