In order to hear petitions brought up against the prosecution of civilians in military courts, the Supreme Court of Pakistan has established a new, larger bench.

SC forms bench to hear military courts case: Pakistan’s Chief Justice, Justice Umar Ata Bandial, will preside over the new bench scheduled from July 18 to July 20.

Justice Ijaz ul Ahsan, Justice Muneeb Akhtar, Justice yahya Afridi, Justice Mazahar Ali Naqvi, and Justice Ayesha Malik are also members of the bench.

The registrar office has announced the hearing in the matter to all parties.

The judges held the final hearing in the case just before leaving for their summer holidays. Previously, Attorney General Mansoor Awan had informed the court that they had detained a total of 102 civilians to undergo trial in military courts.

The chief justice had expressed hope that no military court hearings would start in the interim before adjourning the last hearing.

The court has made the decision not to issue a stay order regarding cases in which military courts have brought civilians.

Another indication of court split during the proceedings was Senior Puisne Judge Qazi Faez Isa’s abrupt withdrawal.
