Variety reported on Wednesday that actors Fawad Khan and Sanam Saeed have joined forces for the new drama “Barzakh,”. The darama will make its debut at the Series Mania Festival in France next month.

This year’s festival, which will be held in France from March 17 to 24. It will feature just one South Asian film, “Barzakh,” according to the festival’s website.

The family drama series, which examines father-son intergenerational trauma, is centred on an elderly man’s search for love. The narrative takes place in a magical universe filled with paranormal creatures and events that alternate between life, death, and rebirth.

The show will make its premiere in the 12-title International Panorama showcase, where it will also compete for honours for best series, director, actress, actor, student jury, and audience.

For Zindagi, the Indian subcontinent-focused programming block on streamer ZEE5 Global, “Barzakh” was produced by Waqas Hassan and Shailja Kejriwal and directed by renowned filmmaker Asim Abbasi.

Aside from “Churails,” the first Pakistani original for Zindagi, Abbasi also helmed the 2018 drama “Cake.”

Barzakh Series Mania Selection

Being selected for Series Mania delighted both Abbasi and Kejriwal.

Being chosen by the programmers at a prominent festival, where some of the most intriguing shows from around the world will be making their premieres, is quite humbling since as artists, we frequently find ourselves working in a bubble for extended periods of time, away from outside viewpoints.

“‘Barzakh’ has been somewhat of an experiment for myself and Zindagi; it’s a story that defies categorization. And for the entire crew, seeing it build a place for itself on a global platform is extremely joyful, he continued.

Additional narrative insights were shared by Abbasi, who asked: “What does it mean to be human? Does our soul survive us? What does it mean to have a soul? How does one find happiness and hope in a never-ending condition of uncertainty? These issues form the basis of “Barzakh.”

The television show was filmed in Karachi and the breathtaking Hunza valley.

Abbasi goes on to describe how “Barzakh” is a very private show.

Abbasi on Barzakh

“After my father passed away and as I watched my son develop into a little boy, I found myself overcome with nostalgia and memories of earlier times and past relationships. I then started to consider my worst concerns, including the extinction of awareness, imagination, and love. And from these anxieties came a tale in which love was, in fact, everlasting. The ultimate human legacy is that it survived us, according to Variety.

“Barzakh is a product of COVID brain,” producer Kejriwal continued. “Asim and I were talking about love, life, and death, losing loved ones, and being unable to say our goodbyes at the moment. Due to a lack of closure, there was a sense of loss as well as perplexity. Due to the fact that both weddings and funerals were taking place on Zoom, death and parting didn’t seem as final as they formerly did.

“This new reality was bizarre, and it became essential to make in-person contact with friends and family in order to make any sense of it. Thus, the concept for a show that was essentially a family reunion emerged, according to her, as reported by Variety.

Families, though, are never simple. And the families that Asim constructs are intricate, multi-layered, agonising, humorous, and vulnerable all at once,” she continued.

Saeed’s “stoic otherworldliness” in the programme was commended by Abbasi, who collaborated with Saeed on “Cake.”
