Blinken Says Warned Chinese Leaders About Cuba

The US has expressed “deep” worries over reports of sensitive operations by Beijing on Cuba and has cautioned Chinese officials of this.

Blinken Warned Chinese Leaders About Cuba: After visiting Beijing, the top US diplomat told reporters in London, “Yes, I made very clear we would have deep concerns about PRC (People’s Republic of China) intelligence or military activities in Cuba.”

We’ve been very explicit about the fact that we’ll be keeping a careful eye on this, he continued.

“And we will safeguard our nation and our interests.”

During his two-day visit, Blinken met with President Xi Jinping and senior Chinese foreign policy officials. Both parties praised the limited progress made during the highest-level US visit to China in almost five years.

Under Xi, significant strains include the expansion of Chinese influence far closer to US boundaries.

Officials in Washington claim that China has established espionage operations in Cuba, right off the southeast coast of the US.

A new joint military training facility between China and Cuba is reportedly being discussed, according to a Wall Street Journal report from earlier on Tuesday.

However, Blinken emphasised that communication with China remained preferable and mentioned the “long relationship” that exists between Xi and President Joe Biden.

“Not engaging would be irresponsible,” he continued, “because it increases the likelihood of misunderstandings, errors in judgement, and consequent conflict.”
