The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) named Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi as the Caretaker CM Punjab after the government and opposition were unable to agree on a caretaker chief minister.

The event occurred at a meeting presided over by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja.

When the administration and opposition couldn’t come to an agreement, the issue was referred to the electoral body in accordance with Clause 3 of Article 224-A of the Constitution.

Among the 15 people present at the speciation meeting of the electoral watchdog were ECP Secretary Umar Hameed Khan, Special Secretary Zafar Iqbal Hussain, and directors generals and additional DGs of the pertinent departments.

The meeting was updated on the situation by Khan and Iqbal. The decision was made by the group after taking into account all legal and constitutional considerations, according to persons familiar with the situation.

The electoral body had till Sunday (today) to choose a candidate for interim chief minister.

It is important to note that the names of Sardar Ahmad Nawaz Sukhera and Naveed Akram Cheema were proposed by the departing chief minister of Punjab, Parvez Elahi, and Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi and Ahad Khan Cheema by the opposition leader, Hamza Shehbaz.

The issue was brought before the ECP after a legislative committee set up by the speaker of the Punjab Assembly was unable to reach agreement on a candidate for the position of interim provincial chief executive.
