The Sindh High Court (SHC) ordered the remove of scandal and defamatory content about actress Mehwish Hayat from various social media platforms on Wednesday.
Mehwish Hayat had complained to the court about a campaign being waged against her on social media. The reason for her complaint was due to the insinuations of a YouTuber regarding specific actresses.
Adil Farooq Raja, a British YouTuber and former army officer, made significant accusations against several actresses on December 31 by using their initials, S.A, K.K, M.H, and H.K.
Mehwish, Kubra, and Sajal Aly were forced to respond to the accusations on social media as internet users tied their initials to them.
The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and Pakistan Telecommunication Authority received notices from the court (PTA). Additionally, it requested a response from each party within two weeks.
Khawaja Naveed, the petitioner’s attorney, claimed at the hearing that Adil Raja is making accusations against her.
Raja allegedly withdrew his accusations against Kubra Khan, according to Mehwish.
She informed the court, “He mentioned my name as M.H.”
The petitioner argued before the court that people who brought false charges are “mentally ill,” and she urged the court to punish them.
Mehwish claimed that despite approaching the FIA as well, nothing is being done.
The defense attorney suggested that the court should discipline the accusers.
After the hearing, Mehwish told reporters that she had had enough of waiting.
Because of the rumours, “I and my family are experiencing mental torment,” she claimed.
The actress claimed that twisted individuals on social media make it their pastime to disparage artists.
Mehwish never lost hope that justice will be served.
Kubra’s request
Kubra filed a petition last week in the high court against Raja, alleging that the YouTuber had made false claims about four media industry actresses, degrading them and causing an insult to their modesty and dignity by alleging that they were used by agencies to entice politicians into compromising positions at safe houses.
A lawyer for the petitioner claimed that Raja afterwards published a new video in which he addressed the situation and apologised for his prior statement. The reputations of actresses, including the petitioner, had been irreversibly harmed throughout the procedure as a result of the materials posted on social media and in cyberspace, the council continued.
The attorney made a claim regarding the actions of YouTuber. He stated that the actions were criminal offenses as per the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act of 2016 (PECA). The attorney argued that PECA recognizes the actions as criminal.
The court warned that defamatory campaigns against the actresses were being circulated. It ordered the FIA and Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to prohibit such channels and accounts.
Kubra is urged by SHC to assist FIA.
A day earlier, when taking up Kubra’s plea once more, the SHC requested that the actress assist the FIA’s investigation.
In a report about the campaign against the television actress, the FIA announced that it has opened an investigation.
However, the organization acknowledged forwarding the case to the PTA. They gave the focal point of the telecommunication authority access to the purported YouTube, Instagram, and Twitter accounts.
