An injury forced Dasun Shanaka, the captain of Sri Lanka, to withdraw from the ICC World Cup 2023, and he was subsequently replace by Chamika Karunaratne.
Shanaka replaced by Karunaratne: During Tuesday’s loss to Pakistan, Dasun Shanaka hurt a muscle in his right thigh. He will be sideline for a minimum of three weeks.
According to the ICC, “the injury needs three weeks to recover.”
The ICC Event Technical Committee approved the replacement of all-rounder Chamika Karunaratne, initially selected as a traveling reserve, to assume Dasun Shanaka’s position in the team. In 23 ODI matches for Sri Lanka, Karunaratne has taken 24 wickets at an average of 28.83.
In Shanaka’s absence, vice-captain Kusal Mendis will serve as the team’s captain.
Sri Lanka, which has lost both of its World Cup opening matches, will take on fellow winless team Australia on Monday in Lucknow.
After reaching a massive 344 on Tuesday against Pakistan, Sri Lanka was facing a crushing six-wicket loss.
However, Pakistan was able to complete the highest World Cup run-chase with 10 balls remaining with to the valiant centuries by Abdullah Shafique and Mohammad Rizwan.
Prior to that, South Africa defeated Sri Lanka by 102 runs in their ICC World Cup 2023 opening thanks to a joint bowling effort following a batting onslaught.
