Israeli bombardments on the sixth day following Hamas’s surprise offensive, the Palestinian Ministry of Health announced on Thursday that the dead toll in the Gaza Strip had reached 1,200.
Death toll in Gaza: According to a spokesperson for the health ministry in Gaza, “the number of martyrs has risen to about 1,200, and the number of wounded has increased to about 5,600.”
As intense Israeli bombardments continue to hit the Palestinian enclave, the United Nations said that more than 338,000 residents in the Gaza Strip have been forced to abandon their homes.
In a statement released on Thursday, the UN humanitarian organisation OCHA stated that “mass displacement throughout the Gaza Strip continues.”
The number of displaced individuals in Gaza has increased by 75,000 by late Wednesday compared to the figure provided 24 hours earlier, reaching 338,934, it added.
Israel made the declaration while pounding Hamas targets in the 2.3 million-person-strong Gaza Strip in response to the terrorists’ unexpected offensive on Saturday.
Biden cautions Iran against joining a fight
While Israeli airstrikes in the Gaza Strip pushed hundreds of thousands of people from their homes, US President Joe Biden warned Iran against interfering in Israel’s fight with Hamas.
In retaliation for a weekend offensive by Hamas militants who broke the border fence surrounding the enclave and rampaged through towns and villages, murdering 1,200 people, wounded over 2,700, and capturing dozens of hostages, the Israeli military said, Israeli jets have been bombing targets in Gaza for days.
According to Brazil’s foreign affairs ministry, the UN Security Council will meet on Friday to examine the escalating confrontation between Israel and Hamas. Brazil is now the rotating UN Security Council presidency.
Brazil’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, cut short a trip to Asia to fly to New York “to participate in a meeting of the United Nations Security Council, called by Brazil… to address the situation in the Gaza Strip,” the ministry announced in a statement.
Brazil called an emergency session of the Security Council on Sunday, the day after Hamas attacked Israel without warning.
