The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) announced on Wednesday that it has scheduled a meeting with political parties to discuss the general election code of conduct for October 4.

ECP discuss election code with political parties: General elections are anticipated to take place in January, months after the constitutionally required cutoff date of November 7, according to the electoral watchdog.

The meeting will take place on October 4 at 2 p.m. at the Elections Commission of Pakistan Secretariat in Islamabad in accordance with Section 233 of the Elections Act 2017.

The leaders of political parties have also received a copy of the draught code of conduct in this regard so they can offer their comments during the consultation. The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) website, www.ecp.gov.pk, also hosts a copy of the drafted Code of Conduct, according to the ECP statement.

The ECP already announced a new constituency demarcation with a four-month completion window.

This development suggests that the general elections, originally scheduled to occur within 90 days following the National Assembly’s dissolution, may not proceed on schedule.

The electoral watchdog will make the final publication of the delimitation available on December 14, 2023, following the delimitation schedule.

Some political parties have criticised the delay in the general elections and called for the polls to take place as soon as feasible.

The ECP has asserted that it will, nevertheless, uphold the integrity of the delimitation process and will not skimp on the delimitation plan’s quality.
