EU urges Azerbaijan to let UN visit Nagorno-Karabakh

After tens of thousands of ethnic Armenians fled, the European Union on Friday urged Azerbaijan to allow a UN team to visit the region of Nagorno-Karabakh “in the next days.”

EU urges Azerbaijan to UN visit: According to a statement from the EU, “a mass exodus of Karabakh Armenians is currently taking place as a result of Azerbaijan’s military operation of September 19 and 20 and the previous months’ long blockade of the Lachin corridor.”

“People in Nagorno-Karabakh are fleeing their homes and seeking refuge in Armenia.”

The statement indicates that Azerbaijan has the responsibility to ensure the safety and rights of Armenians living on the territory, including facilitating the return of displaced individuals to their own houses.

A UN mission must be able to enter the area within the next several days, according to Brussels.

After regaining control of the breakaway territory, Armenia accused Azerbaijan of engaging in “ethnic cleansing” and last week requested that the UN dispatch a mission.

Baku has officially pushed the Armenian population of Nagorno-Karabakh to stay and “reintegrate” into Azerbaijan while denying that it is forcing them out of the region.

Since Azerbaijan ended three decades of separatist control, around 90,000 refugees, or three quarters of the estimated population, have flowed out of the area into Armenia.
