Near Balasore, in the eastern state of Odisha, images from the disaster site showed blood-stained holes in crushed railway carriages.

Rescuers looked for survivors trapped in the twisted wreckage as scores of dead were spread out by the tracks and carriages had completely toppled over in the late-Friday collision.

The full scope of the destruction was visible to rescue personnel when dawn rose on Saturday.

288 people have died, according to Sudhanshu Sarangi, director general of Odisha Fire Services.
