Western governments have long been concerned about Iran’s nuclear program, which has led to sanctions that have hurt the nation’s economy.
The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), a historic agreement, granted Iran sanctions relief in 2015. Despite its repeated denials, this agreement guaranteed that Tehran would never be able to produce nuclear weapons.
However, Iran started to back out of its promises after the US unilaterally withdrew from the agreement in 2018 under the administration of then-President Donald Trump and reinstituted harsh economic penalties.
The pact has stalled in recent months despite intermittent talks to renew it with the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Russia, and China.
Nasser Kanani, the spokesman for the Iranian foreign ministry, stated on Monday that the two countries are actively engaging in informal discussions about the matter.
