The Islamabad High Court (IHC) indicted Irfan Nawaz Memon, the deputy commissioner of the capital, and three other individuals for contempt in a case related to the detention of Shandana Gulzar and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Shehryar Afridi under the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) Ordinance.
Islamabad DC indicted for contempt: Justice Babar Sattar handled the case in which SSP Zafar and DC Memon provided their responses.
DC Memon and SSP Zafar expressed their heartfelt regret to the court while also entering a not guilty plea to the allegations. Additionally, the court charged SP Farooq Buttar and SHO Naseer Manzoor with contempt of court; both defendants, however, rejected the accusations.
The IHC had previously suspended the arrest warrants for PTI leader Shehryar Afridi under the maintenance of public order (MPO) and had ordered his immediate release.
It had also prevented the police from detaining them in any other situation.
On May 16, authorities initially detained Afridi at his home in Islamabad in accordance with Section 3 of the MPO Ordinance, 1960. Shortly after his release from prison on May 30, he was again detaine under the same section.
The Rawalpindi division of the Lahore High Court granted bail to Afridi on August 3, but the police apprehended him shortly after his release from the Adiala prison.
