Sirajul Haq, the leader of Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), announced on Sunday that his organisation would hold a sit-in outside the homes of the governors to demand a reduction in electricity costs.

JI announces protests at Governor House: During a press conference in the Mansoora neighbourhood of Lahore, he declared, “The government wants Rs90 per unit of electricity.”

“While it has been decided that a white paper will be presented to expose the mafia, the protest against bad government decisions will continue.”

The JI and several trade organisations called for a partial shutdown of Pakistan on Saturday in protest of the country’s high electricity costs and the rise in petrol and oil prices, which have already had an impact on those already suffering from debilitating inflation.

He expressed gratitude to the businessmen, carriers, solicitors, ulema, and general populace for taking part in the demonstration.

Siraj was of the opinion that his party did not recognise the agreements made by the previous administrations, namely the loan agreement made with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

He claimed that the arrangement was completely profitable for the crooked elites, while the poor were suffering the most.

The agreements, Siraj continued, had a significant negative impact on the populace, and the party will request information about all agreements in accordance with the Right to Access Information Act.

Additionally, The JI leader issued a warning that if the government did not rethink its choices, the party will submit its next course of action.

“Holding elections soon and putting power in the hands of elected representatives will be a favour from the caretaker government,” he said.
