Only slightly more than 1,000 passenger buses are now in service in the port metropolis of Karachi, Pakistan’s largest city, according to a World Bank assessment.

Representatives of the Sindh government’s transport department gave a briefing on the transport issues in Karachi to Caretaker Finance, Planning, and Development Minister Muhammad Younus Dagha.

Karachi’s comprehensive transportation system requires a total of 15,000 buses. Currently, only 1029 buses are in use on city roads, including 240 buses operated by the People’s Bus Service, 100 buses used for BRT, and 689 older buses run by the private sector.

Additionally, they are conducting a study to determine the viability of routes for the province’s purchase of 500 additional buses.

In order to fill the enormous deficit in public transport for Karachi, the interim province minister Mohammad Younus Dagha instructed officials to encourage the private sector through projects including public-private partnerships.

“The interim minister was present with a plan to establish an endowment that would offer low-interest loans to regional private carriers.”
