PESHAWAR: On Thursday, the federal government named Akhtar Hayat Gandapur as the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) Inspector General of Police (IG). He took Moazzam Jah Ansari’s seat.

For posting as IGP during the temporary setup, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government had suggested the names of three top police officers.

Three senior officials’ names—Akhtar Hayat Gandapur, Saeed Wazir, and Dr. Sohail Habib Tajik—were forwarded to the Establishment Division and the federal government to post one of them as the IGP KP.

The oldest of the three officers, Akhtar Hayat, is a member of the Police Service of Pakistan’s 22nd Common Training Programme (CTP). He was working for the Federal Investigation Agency as an extra director general. Additionally, he has held DIG positions in Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and other forces.

The prime minister conducted interviews with the three top police officers prior to the posting in order to select a qualified IGP. Later, the acting chief minister conducted interviews with two of the officers while the other was unable to do so due to other commitments.

“Resolving the question of whether the police command in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa changed during the temporary administration, this answered it.”

Following the dissolution of the provincial assembly and the installation of a caretaker government in Punjab, the chief secretary and IGP were replaced last month. In Punjab, a number of local and regional police and administrative leaders have recently changed.

“Khyber Pakhtunkhwa IGP Nomination After Rise in Terrorist Attacks and Police Casualties”

“A few days ago, someone replaced the chief secretary of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, but on Thursday they nominated the IGP.”

In recent weeks, the federal government, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s political leadership, and other interested parties evaluated a number of officers for the appointment of IGP.

The biggest issue the KPK Police is now dealing with is the rise in terrorist attacks, particularly ones directed towards the agency. “A suicide bombing on January 30 caused the largest assault on the police, killing 84 policemen and injuring more than 200 others. The sad attack necessitates encouragement for the force.”

In the recent weeks, the military has successfully repelled numerous attacks in Peshawar and other areas of the province.

According to security experts, the next IGP and his deputies must vigorously pursue terrorists, guarantee merit-based postings in all areas, districts, and wings, and reject any political meddling in the operations of the force.

They continued, saying that the police chief will need to address the issue of a shortage of resources and manpower in outlying areas, police stations, and posts that have seen attacks over the past several months in addition to bolstering the morale of officers on the ground.

Up to 119 police officers perished in attacks in the previous year. “A single incident at the Peshawar police headquarters during the first month of the current year injured over 200 police officers and resulted in the deaths of 82 police officers.”
