Multiple people have been hurt in an explosion that occurred on Sunday near Kabul’s military airport. A spokesman for the Taliban-run interior ministry issued this statement.

“Today morning, an explosion took place outside Kabul’s military airport, as a result of which a number of our compatriots were slain and injured,” spokesperson Abdul Nafi Takor told Reuters, adding that investigations are ongoing.

He made no mention of the explosion’s type or intended audience.

Before 8 am, according to nearby residents, a huge explosion was heard on the military side of the heavily protected airport.

They claimed that all roads had been blocked off and that security personnel had walled off the area.

In recent weeks, the Islamic State militant group has been waging a brutal insurgency against the Taliban-run government, targeting important buildings in Kabul. This also includes the Russian and Pakistani embassies and the office of the nation’s previous prime minister.

Many of our fellow citizens were killed and injured in the explosion, Takor added, adding that officials were looking into the tragedy.

Since retaking control in August 2021, the Taliban authorities assert that security has improved. However, there have been numerous bombings and other attacks, many of which were claimed by the local Daesh affiliate.

At least five Chinese nationals suffered injuries when shooters assaulted a Kabul hotel popular with Chinese business executives last month. Daesh claimed the assault.

Since the Taliban retook control, hundreds of people, especially members of Afghanistan’s ethnic communities, have been killed or injured in attacks.
