Users of its Azure Government cloud computing service, which includes numerous U.S. federal agencies, will have access to artificial intelligence large language models (LLMs) from OpenAI, the company that created ChatGPT.

Microsoft offers GPT models: Microsoft, a supporter of OpenAI, has expanded Azure Government’s support for both the startup’s most recent model, GPT-4, and an earlier version, GPT-3.

Which agency will use the LLMs was not specified. Among the federal government clients of Azure Government are the Defence and Energy departments and NASA.

A Defence Technical Information Centre (DTIC) representative, a Defense Department division specializing in gathering military knowledge, told Bloomberg News that the center would investigate the technique.

The endeavor represents the first attempt of its kind by a major firm to provide chatbot technology to the American government.

With 4,500 users of the Azure OpenAI service as of May, the company already provides OpenAI models to its business clients.

According to Microsoft in a blog post, Azure Government clients can use GPT-4, GPT-3, and Embeddings for certain tasks, including content generation, summarization, semantic search, and natural language to code translation.

However, according to a Microsoft spokeswoman quoted by Bloomberg News, users of Azure Government would not have access to ChatGPT specifically. Typically, ChatGPT is accessible via the Azure OpenAI service.

Recent Developments in AI Market and Key Players

According to Microsoft, only the queries entered into the Azure OpenAI Service are transmitted via an encrypted network to the Azure OpenAI model in the commercial environment and are not stored there. The company stated that neither learning about their data nor training the OpenAI model uses government data.

Chinese businesses such as Alibaba (BABA), SenseTime (OTCPK: SNTMF), and Baidu (BIDU) have all introduced their own generative AI services after the debut of ChatGPT. According to a recent survey, Chinese organizations have started 79 LLMs in the last three years to improve their AI technology capabilities.

Several businesses have announced initiatives to gain access to AI in recent months, making it the talk of the town. Nvidia (NVDA) temporarily reached the $1 trillion market valuation in early June as the stock benefited from a surge of investor euphoria surrounding AI.
