Barrister Murtaza Wahab of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) won the election for mayor of Karachi after receiving 173 votes.
Murtaza Wahab elected Karachi mayor: The unconfirmed and unofficial results stated that Hafiz Naeemur Rehman, a JI candidate, received 160 votes.
At Pakitan Arts Council, voting for the mayor and vice mayor of Karachi took place under tight security. After 11 a.m., the Arts Council’s doors were locked.
Wahab and Rehman competed for the position of mayor because all other candidates withdrew their nominations, whereas Salman Abdullah and Saifuddin of the PPP and JI, respectively, ran for the position of deputy mayor.
According to the entrance record, 332 elected members made it to the polling place, while 34 KMC members were unable to make it to the Pakistani Arts Council.
JI expresses concern regarding voting
The voting method was criticised by JI Karachi Ameer and Hafiz Naeemur Rehman, a candidate for mayor of Karachi.
In his protest, Naeem claimed that 34 PTI UC chairmen were absent from the voting process and demanded that their presence in the Arts Council be guaranteed.
The voting process was carried out by a show of hands after the ECP took note of the objection submitted by Hafiz Naeemur Rehamn.
group of PTI defectors
Prior to the Karachi mayor election, the PTI defectors met earlier in the day to plan their future course of action.
Asad Aman, the chairman of the PTI Union Council (UC), was proposed by 30 PTI defectors as their legislative leader at a meeting of PTI members that took place prior to the election of Karachi’s mayor and deputy mayor.
During the election for mayor of Karachi, the members argued that they carried out Asad Aman’s directives.
Party affiliation
With 155 seats, the PPP holds the majority in the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation City Council. However, it falls short of the requisite simple majority to elect its mayor. The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam have both pledged their support to the PPP, although their combined numbers fall short of a simple majority.
With 130 and 63 members, respectively, the JI and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) are the second and third largest parties in the municipal council. Due to the PTI’s support for the JI, their combined votes appear to be 193, which is more than the House’s threshold of 367 members for a simple majority.
