Musk guts X’s election integrity teams ahead of major votes

Elon Musk, the owner of X, said that as crucial elections in numerous nations approach, he had eliminated the platform’s team tasked with upholding electoral integrity.

Musk guts X’s election integrity: “Oh, you mean the team that was undermining election integrity, the ‘Election Integrity’ Team? Musk responded to a story in The Information on Wednesday, stating, “Yeah, we have removed them.”

The website reported that X, formerly known as Twitter, was reducing by half the global workforce responsible for keeping an eye on and preventing disinformation and election-related fraud.

Next year, more than 50 significant elections are project to take place, including the US presidential election as well as elections in India, Africa, and the European Union.

The decision to cut X’s funding came shortly after EU authorities discovered that among the major social networks examined in Brussels’ investigation, X had the highest percentage of misinformation.

Tech companies must better monitor material under a new EU legislation to safeguard European consumers from misinformation and hate speech, and those that violate the rule risk fines.

The layoffs appear to contradict previous comments made by X CEO Linda Yaccarino, who told the Financial Times earlier this week that the platform was expanding its global staff ahead of the busy election season.

When questioned about the allegations in a different interview on Wednesday at the Vox Code Conference, Yaccarino said election integrity was “an issue we take very seriously.”

Contrary to the remarks that were made, she continued, “X is strengthening and expanding its team dedicated to election integrity.”

During their talk, Yaccarino added that X would start to make money early in 2019.

She also declined to say if X would begin charging a fee to each user, hinting that this was only a “idea” and not a concrete strategy.

Musk claimed that the only way to fight the hordes of automated accounts, known as bots, that plague the site, was to introduce a “small monthly payment” for X during a conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last week.
