President Dr. Arif Alvi formally dissolved the National Assembly (NA) by signing the summary that Shehbaz Sharif, the prime minister, had sent.

NA stands dissolved President signs summary: According to Article 58-1 of the Constitution, the president dissolved the National Assembly on the advice of the prime minister, according to an official statement posted by the president’s office on X, formerly known as Twitter.

The current administration, which assumed office following the removal of former Prime Minister and PTI leader Imran Khan through a vote of no-confidence, experienced an early conclusion of its term due to the dissolution of the lower chamber of parliament.

The prime minister announced earlier in the day that he would write to President Dr. Arif Alvi tonight to dissolve the National Assembly (NA), which would result in an early end to the government’s tenure.

Three days before the end of their term, on August 9 (today), the government had declared that the assemblies will be dissolved. Elections would then take place within 90 days.

Elections could be postponed

However, ministers have recently admitted that there is a possibility for the 2023 census to receive “unanimous” acceptance from the Council of Common Interest (CCI), which could result in a delay in conducting the upcoming general elections.

Khawaja Asif has indicated the possibility of a postponement for the upcoming general elections.

“I absolutely think that there will be elections in November. You questioned me, however, about the prospect of a delay, to which I responded, “On technical grounds, there is a possibility of a delay, but not for more than a few months.

Khawaja Asif responded when asked if the acceptance of the 2023 census would cause an election delay: “I cannot conjecture at this time, but it is a possibility. I’ll leave that open.

On the other hand, Rana Sanaullah stated that with fresh delimitations, the general elections would take place in the third week of February or the first week of March.

establishing a caretaker system

Upon dissolving the National Assembly (NA), the government and the opposition needed to achieve a consensus about establishing a caretaker regime. This regime will fill the void until the next general election and the subsequent installation of a newly elected government.

“After consulting with the ruling coalition, both the government and the opposition will choose a mutually agreed-upon name for the caretaker Prime Minister (PM).”

Ishaq Dar, Hafeez Sheikh, and Justice Shakeel Baloch are among the names that have surfaced for the position of interim premier, although the current administration has not endorsed any of them.

Jalil Abbas Jilani’s name first came to light as a serious contender for the position of acting prime minister earlier in the day.

The former foreign secretary has reportedly arrived at PM House to meet with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, according to sources with knowledge of the situation.

To decide on the caretaker PM’s name, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Opposition Leader Raja Riaz will meet today, August 10.
