Today marks Mader-e-Millat Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah’s 130th birthday. She is the sister of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah.

Miss Fatima Jinnah, who was born in Karachi on July 31, 1893, graduated with a dental degree from the Dr. Ahmed Dental College and Hospital of the University of Calcutta in 1923. She then worked as a dentist in Bombay (now Mumbai).

Later, she quit her job and continued working alongside her brother. She also created a forum for the ladies of the subcontinent, which made it easier for Muslims to fight for their own state.

The Women’s Relief Committee, established in 1947 by Fatima Jinnah, served as the foundation for the All Pakistan Women’s Association (APWA). She was also a key contributor to the Muhajirs’ relocation to the nascent Pakistani state.

Because of her involvement in the Freedom Movement, Fatima Jinnah is referred to as the Madr-e-Millat (Mother of the Nation). She returned to politics in the latter half of 1964 to fight for the nation’s return to democracy.

She died on July 9, 1967, at the age of 73, two years later.

People still remember Fatima Jinnah for her fervent support of civil rights and her committed battle in the Pakistan Movement.
