The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) declares that by-elections for 33 National Assembly (NA) seats, which became vacant after NA Speaker Raja Pervaiz Asraf accepted the resignations of the PTI legislators, will take place on March 16.
Nomination papers for the by-polls can be submitted from February 6 to February 8, according to the ECP’s schedule.

The election watchdog announced that the nomination papers would be scrutinised on February 9 and that candidates would receive their election insignia on February 23.
In an effort to help Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif win the confidence vote, the NA speaker accepted the resignations of 34 PTI members and one AML member earlier this month. This was just announced by the party’s chairman Imran Khan. The move was an attempt to increase the number of votes in favor of the Prime Minister during the confidence vote.
On April 11 of last year, 123 PTI MNAs collectively resigned. This was two days after their party’s chairman was removed as prime minister following a no-confidence vote.
